Petition for Siblings
If you’re a U.S. citizen and at least 21, you can petition your siblings to obtain a Family-Based Green Card and become Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs). However, green card holders (permanent residents) cannot sponsor their siblings.
Here’s how the process works:
Steps to Petition for Siblings
1. File Form I-130: The first step in a family-based petition for a sibling is to fill out form I-130 (Petition for alien relative) with USCIS. This form proves the qualifying relationship between you and your sibling.

2. Provide Supporting Documentation: You also need to include some more supporting documents with I-130.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship: Examples include a U.S. birth certificate, passport, or naturalization certificate.
Proof of Relationship:
For biological siblings: Birth certificate of you and your sibling showing at least one shared parent.
For adopted siblings: The adoption takes place before you both turn 16.
For step-siblings: Marriage certificates proving the parental marriage occurred before you turned 18.
3. Approval and Priority Category: Once USCIS approves the I-130 petition, your application will fall under the fourth preference category for family-sponsored immigration.
4. Consular Processing or Adjustment of Status
If Your Sibling is Outside the U.S.: Once a visa number is available, your sibling will proceed with consular processing. This includes submitting documents to the National Visa Center (NVC), completing a visa application, undergoing a medical exam, and attending an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
If Your Sibling is in the U.S.: If a visa number is available, your sibling can file Form I-485 to adjust their status to that of a permanent resident.
